I decided to make my first ever blog post about sweepstakes promoted on social media sites (doesn't everyone love a good sweepstake?). Sweepstakes are a great way for companies and people to interact, and if done correctly can create goodwill and involvement from potential consumers. Unfortunately, many sweepstakes on social media sites are too much of a hassle to sign up for and just make the participants resent the contest and thus company. If the company makes it difficult to sign up for a contest, are they going to be a hassle to work with when I want to do business with them?
My first suggestion is to MAKE IT EASY TO ENTER the sweepstakes! I don't want to fill out a survey or have to give a bunch of personal information to the company to enter a contest. Generally name, age, and email address should suffice. Next and more importantly, don't make the person share the contest on their facebook wall or retweet a post to be eligible. I don't want to spam my friends with every facebook sweepstake I enter. (Also my odds are better the less people that know...) I should be able to use my discretion if I want to share a spectacular sweepstakes with my friends and followers.
Generally, I am happy with a social media sweepstake if it only takes me couple of seconds to sign up and if I don't have to share it on my wall or send it to my friends. Contests create a bond between the participant and the company, and when I enter their contest and get to spend a minute dreaming about what im going to do with a new iPad, a year worth of razors, or a trip to South Africa (thats you Travel Channel). Even though I never win contests, I look more fondly at the company going forward. Who knows maybe that goodwill they earned will make me a more loyal consumer, and isn't that the whole point of a sweepstake for the company.
